Appetite suppression can affect more than eating

If your appetite reduces dramatically, you may expect one main result: eating less.

What many people don’t anticipate is the emotional ripple effect.

Because for a lot of us, food isn’t just fuel.

It’s comfort. Regulation. Reward. Distraction. Connection.

When food has been a coping strategy

If food has helped you cope with stress, loneliness, boredom, grief, or anxiety, appetite suppression can feel like:

  • losing a familiar comfort

  • having fewer “soft landings” in the day

  • feeling emotionally exposed

This can be confusing if you also feel grateful for the physical changes.

Common emotional experiences people describe

  • feeling flat or less motivated

  • irritability (especially when routines change)

  • grief for previous rituals (treats, social meals)

  • anxiety about “doing it right”

  • fear of regain and increased monitoring

  • loneliness if socialising revolves around food

  • unexpected shifts in relationship dynamics

Gentle questions to explore

  • What did food do for me (emotionally) before?

  • What feelings are more visible now?

  • What comforts me in a way that’s kind and sustainable?

  • What does “nourishment” mean beyond calories?

What can help

  • Create new regulation tools: breathing, movement, warmth, music, journaling, reaching out.

  • Keep pleasure on purpose: appetite suppression doesn’t have to mean joy suppression.

  • Support your nervous system: sleep, hydration, routine, gentleness.

  • Notice shame stories: “I should be happy” is not a helpful inner voice.

How therapy can support you

Therapy can help you build coping strategies that don’t depend on food, and process the emotions that show up when the old strategies shift.
